Pooley's TREES of Eastern South Africa
By
Richard Boon
This is a fully revised edition of the best seller Trees of Natal, Zululand and Transkei (1993, 4th Edition) . It is a compact guide describing almost all the indigenous trees, shrubs and woody climbers south of the Limpopo River, the 2nd richest flora region in Africa. In all some 350,000 sq kms extending through KwaZulu-Natal; Eastern Cape, north of the Buffalo River; Lesotho; Eastern Free State; Swaziland and southern Mozambique. Due to its unique and comprehensive nature, the book may also be used as far north as Zambia.
Trees of Natal, Zululand and Transkei established a new standard for field guides when it was first published in 1993, selling out the first edition of 6000 copies in 9 months. When the fourth impression of this book sold out, the Trustees made a decision not to reprint but to revise and thus Pooley’s TREES was born.
With the invaluable assistance of Elsa Pooley, Richard Boon is responsible for all updating (research, photography, mapping, etc). The 625 pages of this new revised edition contain:-
1100 species described and 74 invasive alien species identified
Family and genus descriptions
Informative text facing the colour plates
Leaf line drawings
Flowering and fruiting seasons shown in flower and fruit side bars
Colour distribution maps
A new key highlighting diagnostic features
Ecological, gardening, medicinal and other uses notes
Scientific names also in English, Afrikaans, Zulu, Xhosa and Thonga
The nine introductory pages provide a short and simplified description and photographs of some of the plant communities in the region in which woody vegetation is a significant component.
