SOUTHERN AFRICAN MOUNTAIN FLOWERS
A field guide to the flora of the Drakensberg and Lesotho

This publication is a guide to the magnificent plants of the Drakensberg and associated high mountains which range over two countries, Lesotho and South Africa, and the three provinces - Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal and eastern Free State. The publication has been authored by Elsa Pooley.

This region is the only part of southern Africa with frequent snow and ice, home to high altitude plants popularly known as “alpines”. A forbidding, awe-inspiring territory caught amongst the mists and clouds and basalt peaks. Home to a remarkably diverse plant life where almost 400 species are endemic (plants found only in this area and nowhere else in the world.) So rich in flora and unique is this area ranging between 1000M and 3482M, that in 2002 it was categorized as a ‘hot spot’ and awarded World Heritage Site status.

There are more than 190 species endemic to the area, making it an area of global botanical importance.

For your interest, the beautiful cover photo is of Mont aux Sources, Northern Drakensberg taken and donated by Steven Johnson.
